SEASON 2007 / 8
Ladies 4's (0) vs Havering Ladies 3's (1) on 08 Mar 08
Having two teams in the same Division is always difficult but this penultimate game of the season in Division 2 was played with good spirit and produced some fine hockey.
For the first time in recent weeks, both teams were able to field a full complement of players and each had the luxury of a sub! This ensured that every player could give 100%. The match was quite even for the first 10 minutes although neither side produced any clear openings. However, the 3rd XI took a deserved lead when Megan Miller raced in to deflect a loose ball past county and school team mate Rachael Sarson. Sarson pulled off a string of good saves before Miller added her second 5 minutes before half time.
The 3rd XI began to stretch the 4th Xi after the break, although good work in defence by Helen Joslin and Pat Johnson kept the 3rd team from increasing the lead. The 3rd’s third goal came from an impressive attacking move resulting in a goal for Nicola Gore who slipped the ball past Sarson with pin-point accuracy. Gore grabbed her second five minutes later as the 3rd team put together a fine spell of play. However, this did not deter the 4th who had veterans Liz Meehan and Lisa Wilson working tirelessly in midfield. Faye Downes and Nardina Chuter continued to combine well up front for the 4’s but the 3rd ‘s were well in control and completed their tally 5 minutes from the end when Nicola Day scored her second goal of the season from close range.
The 4th Xi remain bottom of the Division and are likely to be relegated but the win for the 3rd’s should be enough to ensure they play in Division 2 next season.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Upminster Ladies 3's (1) on 01 Mar 08
This week the Ladies 4s travelled to Gloucester Park to face Upminster. The game started well and although the wind made it difficult to hear people across the pitch Havering were linking passes cleverly. Good work from Dini Chuter and Faye Downes meant that Havering were the more dominant force going forward. Supported by a strong defenc Upminster’s main play was a long ball through the middle. These were picked up comfortably by Pat Johnson and Helen Joslin.
The only goal of the game came 15 mins before the end of the second half. Completely against the run of play, Havering were left exposed and a two-on-one left the goalie with no choice. Havering battled until the end even giving skipper Gemma Shepherd a run out on pitch for the first time in 4 years. Unfortunately Havering could not get back the goal deficit. The game ended 1-0.

Ladies 4's (1) vs Rochford Casuals (3) on 09 Feb 08
After a weeks break Havering were keen to get back to Campion on a beautifully sunny day. The match started well with lots of possession. Several breaks down the right from Faye Downes aided by Lisa Wilson and Paula Johnson meant that Havering were soon troubling the Rochford defence. Havering progressed from this positive start and won several short corners. The only Havering goal came when Paula Johnson converted a Liz Meehan strike from a short corner after 20 or so minutes. Unfortunately the team were unable to capitalise on the lead having sustained two injuries. Finishing the game with ten gave Rochford that bit of extra space which they used well. The game finished 1-3.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Old Deferrians (2) on 12 Jan 08
After a two week break Havering were eager to get the second half of the season under way. With unavailabilty higher up the XIs and no fifth team fixture to fulfil it was a mix and match team.
Havering started the game with confidence but it was soon apparent that ODF were going to keep the pressure on. After 15 minutes and some outstanding saves from Rachel Sarson the ball broke loose in the 'D' with an attacker feet from the goal line. 0-1.
After half time all Havering kept going with the belief that we could at least get a point but a controversial decision regarding obsruction left an attacker 1 on 1 with the goalie. 0 -2.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Old Loughts 4's (6) on 15 Dec 07
Havering went into the second half of the season hopeful that they would have a better result than the season opener. Unfortunately this wasn't to be as Old Loughts once again put 6 away. Not all bad came from the game however, as some inspirational play from the Havering youngsters prevailed. A long rest over Christmas should see the team return with a fighting spirit.

Ladies 4's (2) vs Havering Ladies 3's (2) on 01 Dec 07
Due to player unavailability throughout the club this fixture was always going to be difficult with both sides playing with just 9 players.
The 3rd XI pressed forward from the start but a well organised 4th team ably soaked up the early pressure. As the 3rd XI fought to gain control of the match a quick through ball from Paula Johnson found Emma Knight unmarked and she put the 4th XI in the lead with a well timed strike from the top of the D.
The 3rd team tried hard to draw level but solid defending from Johnson, Helen Joslin and Louise Burgess saw the 4th’s go into the half time break 1-0 up.
The 3rd’s reorganised slightly in the second period and their equaliser eventually came with a well placed shot by Abi Gowers. The 3rd’s began another period of pressure in search of the lead but, again, as they pushed forward, Emma Knight was left free up front to pick up another through ball and she rounded the 3rd team goalkeeper to grab her second for the 4th’s.
The 3rd’s once again began to string together some intricate passing and their hard work soon paid off when Gowers claimed her brace with a short corner strike which sailed into the net past the stranded Gemma Shepherd who was wrong footed by an unfortunate deflection off Johnson.
There was much untidy play in the final 10 minutes as both teams inevitably tired but a draw was probably the right result based on the hard work and effort from everyone on the pitch.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Upminster Ladies 3's (6) on 24 Nov 07
Havering struggled this week missing some key players, however, they battled until the final whistle. Although lacking some experience, all the players put in 100% effort and produced some wonderful periods of hockey. 5th team goalie Rachael Sarson had an impressive match playing in an outfield role for the first time for the club.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Dunmow Ladies (3) on 17 Nov 07
Havering had a hard task this week going up against top of the league Dunmow. Although it felt like most of the first half was played in the Havering 'D' some brilliant defending from the whole team meant that it was 0-0 at half time.
In the second half Dunmow kept the pressure on but Havering still had a couple of breaks into the their 'D'. With 15 minutes to go, Dunmow scored. With some new confidence they pushed forward and were able to add to more before the full time whistle.
Havering are at home to Upminster next week.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Rochford Casuals Ladies (2) on 10 Nov 07
Havering started out with some good possession but were soon under pressure as Rochford began to take control. After 20 mins, Havering conceded a soft goal but this spurred the visitors to some determined play, particularly in midfield, resulting in a spell where Havering were awarded a string of short corners just before the break.
The second half saw some brilliant skills and hard work from Megan Miller and Maria Griffin .This meant that Havering were often in the opposition D and consequently we earned more short corners in search of the equaliser. However Havering were still unable to penetrate the Rochford goal and their fate was sealed by a second Rochford goal with 15 mins to go.

Ladies 4's (2) vs County Wanderers Ladies (1) on 03 Nov 07
Havering produced their first win of this season on Saturday against County Wanderers. Having never played this opposition before and did not know what they were up against and this was soon apparent as they were caught sleeping in the first 5 minutes and some clever play from the visitors saw them go 1-0 up. Not letting this affect their game, Havering dug deep for some inspirational play. Havering moved Laura Chamberlin into centre midfield to man mark Wanderers’ danger player and this proved a wise decision because Wanderers were continuingly forced wide.
Tremendous work from Louise Burgess and Alison Floyd on the right meant that Havering were often in the oppositions half and this allowed forwards Emma Knight and Paula Johnson some space. Johnson received the ball far right, took two players with her and put in a pin point cross for Knight top grab Havering’s equaliser and her first goal of the season who was unmarked on the D.
The second goal came from Alison Floyd. A saved strike from the left, the ball went across the goal for Alison to put it in on the right post. Now 2-1 up Havering continued to play some enjoyable Hockey. Two shots at the Havering goal with only 6 minutes to go meant that Havering had to defend well to keep the 3 points. Brilliant defending and a stretched save from the goalie Gemma Shepherd meant Havering were successful.

Ladies 4's (0) vs Southend & Benfleet 2's (1) on 20 Oct 07
In a game that saw the opposition win 14 short corners and not score from one of them is a testament to how well the Havering 4s played this week.
Havering battled hard for the 70 minutes against the team who were second in the league. Havering played some fantastic hockey combining the youth and fitness of the younger players with the knowledge and experience of some older ones. Unfortunately with 3 minutes to go Southend & Benfleet broke through the Havering defence to take the 3 points.

Ladies 4's (2) vs Basildon Ladies 3's (2) on 13 Oct 07
Havering 4s gave another strong performance this week against a good Basildon side. Having had gone 1-0 down but Havering fought back from the restart and within 7 passes, Faye Downes was one-on-one with the goal keeper and when her initial shot was saved she managed to slot home the rebound to make it 1-1 about ten minutes before half time.
A change of position leaving Paula Johnson as a holding player allowing Adele Sammons to push through meant Havering won several short corners. Good saves from the Basildon keeper denied Emily Defroand, Nardina Chuter and Liz Meehan.
The second half saw some hard work put in from all the defence as Basildon kept pushing forward. Well timed tackles from Charlotte Newman, man to man marking from Francesca Joyce and the interception skills of Louise Burgess meant the Havering kept the visitors at bay. A break in the midfield saw Maria Griffin go round two players and then win a free hit just inside the 23 yard line.
A strong strike into the D, then Havering were awarded a short corner. A strike from the top saved but Adele Sammons was in place to put Havering ahead 2-1. End to end play ensued for the rest of the match but rarely were Basildon in the Havering D to get a strike. However with just minutes to go, Basildon slipped through the Havering defence to grab the equaliser.

Ladies 4's (1) vs Old De Ferrians Ladies 2's (1) on 06 Oct 07
Havering’s 4th XI celebrated their first point for this season with a well
deserved draw away at Old De Ferrians.
With a squad of twelve, consisting mostly of young and energetic players Havering were able to start the game strong. With the first short corner of the game they were able to go 1-0 up after a great strike from the experienced Liz Meehan.
Soon after though, an unlucky break left the opposition one-on-one with the goal keeper and the De Ferrians strike was too much and the home side were back on even terms at 1-1.
With ten minutes left in the first half, Havering kept working hard and due to some inspirational play on the right involving Megan Miller, Vicky Paxton and Paula Johnson, Havering won two consecutive short corners minutes from the half time whistle. Unfortunately the shots were saved, but Havering came off ready to fight in the second half.
The entire second half was saw fine end-to-end play keeping the watching supporters thoroughly entertained and despite both teams having the chances to grab the three points, a draw was probably the right result.
